about

Khamira release their second album 'Undod/Unity' in September 2022. On 'Undod/Unity' Khamira take a major step forward with their band sound, fusing Welsh folk songs, Hindustani classical music and jazz.
3 musicians from Wales and 3 from India have come together to create original World Music combining elements of Welsh folk music, Hindustani classical music and jazz.
Khamira have labelled their genre-defying music as 'Improvised World Music from Wales and India.'

The title 'Undod/Unity' is a deliberate statement in these troubled times - emphasising the importance and benefits of cross-cultural collaborations which engenders mutual understanding and appreciation of differing cultures and experiences. For the jazz-aficionados it is also a nod towards Larry Young's classic Blue Note record of the same name from 1965.

Album liner notes:
Khamira is a band that means a lot to me. Having started out in 2015, to still be functioning as a transcontinental band seven years later is not an insignificant achievement - and largely down to the connection that we as band members and, more importantly, as humans have made. We have managed to meet up and perform every single year since our inception (except for 2021, when there was a global pandemic). On this album, there is a definite development in the band’s sound when compared to our first release, Khamira (Recordiau Bopa 003) in 2017. The tracks on Undod / Unity are a mixture of original compositions, interpretations of Welsh and Indian traditional musics – presented in our unique musical contexts – and one cover version of a favourite Miles Davis song of mine. I would like to thank Tŷ Cerdd for releasing Undod / Unity – the title is a deliberate statement in these troubled times. But my main thanks are to Adi, Suhail, Aidan, Vishal and Mark for their immense creativity and commitment. I hope you enjoy the music. - Tomos Williams

Nodiadau'r albym:
Mae Khamira yn agos iawn at fy nghalon. Fe ddechreuon ni yn 2015 ac mae'r ffaith bod band trawsgyfandirol yn dal i berfformio saith mlynedd yn ddiweddarach yn dipyn o gamp. Mae hynny’n rhannol oherwydd ein cyd-dynnu cerddorol a chreadigol ond yn bennaf oganlyniad i’n cyfeillgarwch a’n cysylltiad fel pobl. R’yn ni wedi llwyddo i gwrdd ac iberfformio bob blwyddyn ers 2015 (ar wahân i 2021 o ganlyniad i bandemig byd eang). Aryr albwm hwn, fe glywch chi ddatblygiad sicr yn ein cerddoriaeth o gymharu â’n halbwmcyntaf, Khamira (Recordiau Bopa 003), a ryddhawyd yn 2017. Mae yma gymysgedd o gyfansoddiadau gwreiddiol, darlleniadau unigryw o alawon traddodiadol o Gymru ac India a fersiwn o alaw hoff gan Miles Davis. Rwy'n ddiolchgar i Tŷ Cerdd am ryddhau Undod / Unity – teitl hollol fwriadol â’r oes mor dreng. Ond mae fy niolch pennaf i Adi, Suhail, Aidan, Vishal a Mark am eu hymrwymiad, eu creadigrwydd a'u talent. Gobeithio y gwnewch chi fwynhau'r gerddoriaeth. - Tomos Williams
